Summer Skin Solutions

Summer is here, and chances are you’ll be spending lots of time outdoors. If you’re like many people, your skin may change during the summer and become more oily or acne-prone. Get your skin summer-ready and protect yourself from the sun with these tips for beautiful summer skin.

Stay Hydrated

Healthy skin starts from the inside out, so it is especially important to drink at least 8 glasses of water daily. Increase this amount if you are in the sun for an extended period, or if you are very active. If you drink caffeine or alcohol, your body needs extra water to detoxify. Remember, if you FEEL thirsty, that is a sign that your body is already dehydrated.

Exfoliate

Removing dead skin cells helps your body get rid of environmental toxins and allows your skin to more readily absorb moisturizer and sunscreen. If your skin is very oily, stick to exfoliating no more than twice per week, as over-exfoliating can trigger your skin to produce more oil.

Sunscreen

It goes without saying that your skin needs to be protected from the sun if you are outside for any length of time. And the effects of sun damage are cumulative, so five 10-minute sessions in the sun are the equivalent of one 50-minute session. If you are applying makeup, be sure to start with a sunscreen as a base. Mineral-based sunscreens rather than traditional drugstore brands are the best for your skin and the environment. Chemicals in many common brands of sunscreens can damage your health and have been shown to destroy coral reefs. Look for sunscreens with non-nano zinc oxide as the active ingredient. Read the directions carefully and reapply as often as needed.

When considering sunscreen options, remember that your lips also need care. Drinking lots of water will help them stay hydrated, but look for a lip balm with SPF to protect them from the damaging and drying effects of the sun. And whenever possible, try to stay out of the sun during the middle of the day when the sun’s rays are likely to do the most damage.

After-Sun Care

If you do happen to get a bit too much sun, pamper your skin with a refreshing cool mist spray. There are many after-sun sprays on the market, but you can make your own for a fraction of the price. In a 4-oz glass spray bottle, add 2 tablespoons of aloe vera gel. Then fill the rest of the bottle with ½ witch hazel and ½ distilled water. Top it off with 10 drops of lavender essential oil and 5 drops of peppermint essential oil. Shake well and spray directly on skin. For extra soothing relief, keep the spray bottle in the refrigerator until you are ready to use it.
